Review by Bill: The McKinley Explorer is a great N scale passenger set. The F9A powered locomotive is a well-constructed and durable locomotive. The second F9A is unpowered. The three full-dome cars are the same as the real ones that are in service on the Explorer. This is one of my favorite trains. A very colorful and eye-catching set. The warranty is a nice feature. Bachmann has been manufacturing N scale trains since the 1960s.

Review by John Bell: I have been running this train for 2 years now and I’m very pleased. Dollar for dollar, I think its worth it. This train set is not for kids, but only because of the couplers. The couplers are not very good and break very easy. Fortunately, there are better couplers available for conversion. I had to add weights to the passenger cars to keep them from falling of the track, but the engine just keeps on running. I have 7 other brands of engines and this little engine out runs them all. Most people don’t like them because you can’t convert them to DCC, at least not very easily. I let my 7-year-old grandson run this train (after I couple them) and he runs them pretty hard. He constantly throws the reversing switch without stopping the engine first, which is a very bad thing, but its still running.

Bachmann Trains Thunder Valley Ready-to-Run N Scale Train Set Reviews

Review by Michael J. Reese: The Bachmann Thunder Valley train set makes a nice entry-level set for anyone looking at getting into N-scale model railroading. Keep in mind that N-scale is approximately 1:160 scale, so this train is SMALL. That makes it ideal for people with limited space, but less appropriate for the very young.

I purchased a few Bachmann sets to get a small stable of trains for the layout I’m building, and this one, while cheapest, is also my favorite. The engine is strong, and not as tempermental as some of the steam locomotive models from Bachmann. It can easily handle a 4% grade with a full consist, and runs smoothly.

This set only comes with a circle of EZ Track, so you’ll be needing more. I initially wasn’t thrilled with the idea of EZ Track (which has the trackbed permanently attached) but it actually works very nicely, and is far superior for use as a temporary tabletop or floor setup than traditional track would be.

The electrical components of the set are also solid, if somewhat simplistic.

This is a solid set for anyone getting started with N-Scale model railroading, and given the price, it would be hard to beat.

Review by J. Lewis: The train was priced very low and that should have given me a clue as to it’s quality. The couplers are the cheap, plastic type that are very hard to get coupled to begin with and then after several trips around the oval they mysteriously disconnect themselves. I spent the entire time that I ran the train, re-coupling the cars. You get what you pay for. This set will go on Craigslist very soon.

Bachmann Trains The Frontiersman Ready-to-Run N Scale Train Set Reviews

Review by Bill: The locomotive (a replica of the “Jupiter”) and cars in this set are smaller that one usually encounters since they represent trains as they were in the 19th Century. But, don’t let the small size of the locomotive fool you…it’s a very powerful little engine. The motor is in the tender and transmits the power to the drive wheels on the locomotive. It easily pulls the five freight cars included and will pull a couple additional cars. Remember, trains were not long back then! You should be pleased with this beauty. There is a lifetime limited waranty on the locomotive.

The engine looks very much like the one at Disney World. Excursion cars similar to those used at Disney World are available from Bachmann.

The train is really not a toy but a precision instrument. Children will have much trouble assembling the track and placing the train on the track.
